The one-to-one Three channels the Achiever's drive into being desirable and into the success of the people closest to them. Naranjo used the word charisma, and Chestnut notes that 3sxs often find it easier to promote a partner, child or team than themselves. They are the least overtly competitive Threes, and their image concern is aimed at being attractive (physically, socially, as a partner).
Many 3sxs are warm, gentle and supportive, and they may look like Twos. Underneath, they can be unsure who they are apart from how they appear to a loved one, and their own feelings can be buried beneath a pleasing performance. Type 3 overview · One-to-one instinct
What it looks like day to day
A 3sx might spend an evening polishing a partner's job application, then worry about whether they look good enough for the dinner afterwards. They pay attention to appearance and to the impression they make on one important person.
A closer look
The 3sx's focus on attractiveness is about being worthy of love. If they are appealing enough, they reason, they will be chosen. This can make them generous and attentive partners. It can also make them anxious about ageing, rejection and comparison.
Day-to-day example
A 3sx helps their partner prepare for a big presentation, rehearsing with them and choosing an outfit. The presentation goes well and the 3sx glows with pride, then realises they haven't worked on their own goals in weeks.
Strengths
- Generous promotion of others' talents
- Warmth and attractiveness that draws people in
- Ability to motivate a partner or team member one-to-one
Blind spots
- Shaping themselves around what a partner wants
- Suppressing their own feelings and ambitions
- Fear of being unappealing
Under stress
Under stress a 3sx may work harder to be pleasing, then feel empty and disconnected. They may withdraw into numbing routines. A return to their own desires (what do I want?) is the way back.
In relationships
They are devoted, attentive and supportive partners who want to be desired. Saying "I'm not okay" and letting a partner see the unpolished self builds trust.
At work
3sxs flourish in coaching, design, entertainment, hospitality and roles where they champion others. They may need encouragement to claim credit and pursue their own goals.
How 3sx differs from the other Threes
The 3sp works quietly; the 3so seeks public prestige. The 3sx turns the Achiever's energy into relationships and attractiveness.
Often mistaken for
Two, because of the supportiveness; Four, because of the emotional depth. Twos want to be needed; 3sxs want to be valued and desired. Fours want to be unique; 3sxs want to be appealing.
Growth
- Set a goal that has nothing to do with anyone else.
- Share an unpolished feeling.
- Notice when you are performing for one person.
